Saxon woman’s costume from Prázsmár

Provincialism: Szász
Region: Prázsmár
A dark blue velvet headdress with brown embroidery for wives is on the head. A wide and large embroidered ribbon is placed on the neck and on the back of the head; the face is surrounded by a black tulle veil. The neck of the white blouse has sewn-down décor; its long sleeves are tied with narrow straps. The vest is black velvet and has buttons on the front; its neck is decorated with colorful flower embroidery on a cotton background. The skirt is made of black repp adorned with machine-made black silk roses, and there are frills stitched up on the bottom section. The white sejtes apron has white embroidery; a silk kerchief is stuck into its waist around which there is a decorative headdress sash. High ankle shoes with black shoelaces are on the feet.

Girl’s costume from Alsócsitár

Region: Alsócsitár
A colorful ribbon is tied into the hair that hangs off in a single braid to the back. The costume is composed of a sleeved blouse made of satin, adorned with lilacs and decorated with metal lace; an accordion-pleated, turquoise brocade skirt adorned with lilacs, and a tilangli apron divided into two parts by a single ribbon and edged with golden threads on both sides. Black spanglis shoes are on the feet.

Young wife’s costume from Nyitra

Region: Nyitra
The headdress for young ladies is richly decorated with pearl embroidery and affixed to a soft, embroidered under-headdress that nearly covers the entire head. The skirt is made of mulberry-colored brocade and gathered at the waistline; it has a ribbon in the middle section and is decorated with pearl embroidery. Completing the ensemble are a narrow-sleeved blouse embroidered with wool yarn and a bodice made of brocade and richly decorated with manual embroidery, pearl embroidery and manufactured patent décor. The evenly sectioned apron, made of the same material as the skirt, is decorated with manual embroidery and machine-made patent décor; it is worn over the skirt. Black spanglis shoes are on the feet.

Saxon costume from Berve

Provincialism: Szász
Region: Berve
The blouse is white and has sewn-down décor around the neck. The vest is made of satin silk. The upper jacket has bone and decorative buttons. The collar is trimmed with lamb fur. The apron has striped patterns on black satin cloth, and the owner’s name and the date is embroidered into the textile amongst the flower patterns. This is a mourning apron and was also worn during fasting periods.

Kerchiefs from Nyitra

Region: Nyitra
Velvet shawls in various colors, with printed patterns and handmade flower embroidery, and set off with strings of pearls. Every shawl is decorated with knitted silk fringes that match the basic color of the particular shawl.

Ujjas jackets from Nyitra

Region: Nyitra
Displayed are ceremonial outer garments in various colors and made of silk, velvet and flame-colored textile. The fronts and backs of the jackets are richly adorned with wool embroidery, colorful ribbon trimmings and strings of pearls.

Woman’s costume from Nyitra

Region: Nyitra
The fringed brocade shawl, adorned richly with pearl embroidery and the so-called obregáció, is affixed to a soft headdress that nearly covers the entire head. The flat-pleated skirt is made of green brocade with machine-made lace décor in its central section and with handmade embroidery. The so-called vizitke is made of the same textile and is richly decorated with handmade embroidery, pearl embroidery and patent décor. The evenly sectioned apron is made of the same material as the skirt and is decorated with handmade embroidery and machine-made patent décor; it is worn over the skirt. Brown leather boots with arched boot-legs and decoration fitted to the arch are on the feet.

Lad’s costume from Alsócsitár

Region: Alsócsitár
A ribboned felt hat is on the head. The fine linen shirt is decorated with koloni flat-stitched embroidery and is accordion pleated on the shoulders and on the cuffs. The silver buttoned lajbi is made of blue kamgarn cloth under which there is a pair of breeches. There are two pockets on the breeches at the hip, and there is braiding on the central section of the thighs. A pair of hard shaft boots with buttons is on the feet.

Man’s costume from Zsére

Provincialism: Felvidék
Region: Zsére
A narrow-brimmed felt hat with ribbons is on the head. The loose shirt is made of linen. The sleeves are richly decorated with applied ornamental embroidery. Each leg of the loose linen trousers is made of textile as wide as a half a roll of material, and the legs have fringes. The accordion-pleated, black satin cloth apron, which reaches below the knees, is worn over it. The boots are made of pigskin and are sewn at the back.

The skirt is made of black waxed dyed textile and is decorated with appliquéd trimming and wool yarn sewn-down patterns. The skirt is accordion pleated and arranged into flat pleats underneath. The lajbi is made of black waxed dyed textile, while the blouse is made of cotton linen; it is accordion pleated on the cuffs and decorated with white embroidery. The apron worn over the skirt is made of black textile and decorated with black velvet. It was worn during the last announcement act before the wedding ceremony, thus it is called “announcement dress.
